BCX and Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment
Transformation is an ongoing journey for us. Through our Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) initiatives, we focus on creating real opportunities for participation, growth and inclusion, both within BCX and across the broader economy.
By investing in people, partnerships and long-term progress, we aim to contribute to a stronger, more equitable future for all.
BCX is a Level 1 contributor in terms of ICT B-BBEE Sector Code, and our strategy is based on several elements.
Management Control
The organisation has demonstrated its strong commitment to transformation and inclusivity through:
100% Black representation at Board level
100% Black representation at Executive level
26% Black women employed across the business
This reflects meaningful progress in advancing Black participation and women empowerment within the organisation.
Equity Ownership
BCX is a 100% owned subsidiary of the Telkom Group and via the Flow through principle holds 23.45% Black ownership, of which 11.72% is Black women ownership.
Employment Equity
66% of the overall workforce comprises Previously Disadvantaged Individuals (PDIs)
3.14% of the workforce are people with disabilities
This demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels.
Skills Development
At BCX, our skills development initiatives centre on management development, ICT technical skills as well as internships and learnerships across various areas of the business.
Over the past three years, in partnership with accredited training providers, we have successfully trained over 600 Black unemployed individuals, empowering them with relevant and market-ready skills.
We believe the success and relevance of any business lie in making bold decisions to deploy technology, solve complex business challenges and unlock new opportunities, and our investment in skills development ensures we build the talent to do just that.
Preferential Procurement
At BCX, we are proud to report that 133% of our total measured procurement spend is with B-BBEE-compliant vendors. This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to advancing transformation, empowering black-owned businesses, and strengthening inclusive economic growth through our supply chain.
Enterprise and Supplier Development
BCX is committed to driving inclusive economic growth by supporting new and existing Black-owned SMMEs. Through our Enterprise and Supplier Development initiatives, we enable entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses that strengthen supply chains, create jobs and contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s economy.
BCX has a few structured programmes that empower entrepreneurs, including:
Access to market initiatives – creating real opportunities for SMMEs to integrate into BCX’s supply chain and broader ICT ecosystem.
Funding and financial support – offering early payment terms and facilitating access to finance for growth.
Capacity building – training, certification support, and digital tools that improve business efficiency and competitiveness.
Enterprise networks – networking events and supplier days to connect entrepreneurs with procurement leaders and industry peers.
Socio-Economic Development
BCX is committed to being an innovative and inspirational corporate citizen on the African continent. Our responsibility towards the communities where we operate is a business imperative in that it contributes to the sustainability of our business. BCX focusses its direct activities on a School Development Programme, so the bulk of our socio-economic development (SED) funding is channelled to the Telkom Foundation.
The Foundation is committed to making meaningful contributions to improving the livelihoods of people in disadvantaged communities, through a range of structured programmes. Through employee voluntarism, the Foundation also seeks to promote and embed a culture of giving across the organisation.
Good governance, sound risk management, stakeholder engagement, B-BBEE and sustainability all form part of our vision to be a leading information and communications technology (ICT) player in Africa and beyond.
