A Premium SIP Trunk is a quality enabled next generation voice solution which is designed and implemented to meet customer specific business requirements.
What is Premium SIP Trunking?
The Premium SIP Trunking Solution combines a variety of technologies which allows you to make and receive calls, and send multimedia over a data connection. This solution consists of two components: a number of SIP sessions and quality enabled access, referred to as VoIP Connect Access, consisting of ME Fibre Access, a Cisco router, router management, and a Service Level Agreement. For security purposes and to ensure interoperability between the customer PBX and the network SIP infrastructure, a mandatory Session Border Controller is required. The Session Border Controller can either be provided by Telkom Business Connexion or a third party supplier of your choice. Each of these technologies in the SIP Trunk solution work together to provide you with the highest quality of voice communications currently available.
ME Fibre Access: We provide the solution over a Telkom Business Connexion Metro Ethernet (ME) Fibre Access, ensuring the permanent availability of uncontended, real-time bandwidth for voice calls.
Service Level Agreement on ME Fibre Access: We will provide a silver or bronze availability Service Level Agreement (SLA) on the ME Fibre Access which guarantees a maximum down-time of either 6 or 12 hours a month.
Cisco Router and management: The Cisco router is proactively managed, which allows the remotely monitoring of the service and the ability to detect and attend to any anomalies or failures in advance.
Session Border Controller: Ensures the network and equipment are able to exchange and make use of information and acts as a voice firewall.

A Premium SIP Trunk solution is aimed at the customer who requires superior voice quality. Premium SIP Trunking is offered as a solution, designed and implemented to meet customer specific requirements
To ensure the voice quality the solution is only provided over a Telkom Business Connexion Metro Ethernet (ME) Fibre Access, ensuring the permanent availability of uncontended, real-time bandwidth for voice calls. Telkom Business Connexion will remotely monitor the service, proactively detecting and responding to any anomalies or failures. A silver or bronze availability Service Level Agreement (SLA) will be provided on the ME Fibre Access. There is a SLA on the access, guaranteeing the availability of the access service. The combination of ME Fibre Access, Router management and SLA is referred to as VoIP Connect Access. As part of a Premium SIP Trunk solution a mandatory Session Border Controller (SBC) is required. The SBC is required to ensure interoperability between the customer network and customer network equipment. It is a voice firewall and it is critical in the deployment of a redundant solution.
Non-redundant access deployment This is the most basic deployment configuration. In this deployment a single VoIP Connect Access will be provided between the Telkom network and the customer premises. There is a SLA on the access, supporting the minimum down time. It should be noted that all the equipment in the Telkom network supporting the service is deployed in high availability and redundant configurations. The diagram below depicts a high-level schematic of a non-redundant Premium SIP Trunk solution.
Redundant access deployment In a redundant access deployment, two VoIP Connect Access links will be provided. In this configuration, the bandwidth of each Fibre Access link will be dimensioned to carry 100 per cent of the voice traffic. Active load balancing will be implemented over the two VoIP Connect Access links resulting is a 50/50 split of the voice traffic over the two VoIP Connect Access links. In the event of one of the VoIP Connect Access links failing, the Telkom network will detect the failure and all traffic will automatically be routed via the remaining link, which is already dimensioned to carry 100 per cent of the traffic. Therefore, no down time or deterioration of the voice service will be experienced. There is a SLA on the access links, meaning Telkom Business Connexion guarantees the availability of the fibre. Once the failure is restored the load-balancing will continue as normal. As captured in the high-level schematic below various deployment configurations are possible, however the load balancing principle is always implemented in the same way. In this deployment all the numbers and number ranges of the distributed legacy voice services will be migrated to the SIP
