Introduction to VPN Clear
A Quality of Service (QoS) enabled Virtual Private Network, VPN Clear allows you to consolidate and prioritise your business’s voice, video and various grades of data communication onto a single, secure network, while retaining ownership and management of your own router.
What is VPN Clear?
VPN Clear, a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) IP Virtual Private Network (VPN), was developed to provide “any to any” connectivity to your sites through a private, secure and reliable network.
MPLS enables your business to bypass the internet and consolidate and prioritise your voice, video and various grades of data communications onto a single VPN.
Applications on the network are given a specific level of service based on their importance to the business and technical nature (such as the ability to handle the delay before a transfer of data begins). VPN offers flexible access options.

More About VPN Clear
VPN Clear is offered on IPNet; Telkom’s core MPLS network. The VPN is provisioned by the means of Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRFs) configured on the VPN Provider Edge routers (a router between one network provider’s area and another). A port will be allocated to the customer per site and linked to the VRF. The supported access technologies are limited to the following access technologies:
- MetroLink, (Direct Fibre: 2- 1000 Mbps, Microwave Access: 2 – 140 Mbps and GPON & VDSL: 1 – 4 Mbps “Standard access”)
- Diginet (is about to be phased out soon)
An International Private Leased Circuit (IPLC) is only used to extend the VPNC reach-ability outside the borders of South Africa.
You are allowed to use any private IP addresses or owned public addresses on the Wide Area Network (WAN) of VPN Clear. These IP addresses must be provided upon the signing of the contract so that we can configure the IP addresses PE routers (which includes the WAN IP addresses as well as the LAN Subnets which will be routable on the VPN). Do not forget that it is your responsibility to configure your own IP addresses on the Customer Edge routers (the router located on your premises that provides an interface between your LAN and our core network). Telkom-owned public IP addresses are not needed on the WAN segment because Telkom will not be managing the CE routers.
For high availability sites, dynamic routing protocols (BGP) will be configured between your CE and the PE routers, however you are responsible to choose which links will be used as a primary and a secondary link.
Since the customer is in control of the CE routers and Telkom has no management access to the CE routers, Telkom cannot offer Layer 3 active availability guarantees on the access circuits. Layer 2 reactive availability will be available on the access as is with other leased line products. The SLA (Service Level Agreement) will only come into play once you have logged a fault at a designated call centre. Rebates will only be offered if it is determined that the fault did not originate on the CE router but rather on the access between the PE and L2 terminating device.
SLAs will be offered on availability guarantees in the access network. Violations in terms of this availability guarantee will be compensated with service credits.
Performance SLAs are only provided on the Core network and performance SLA is measured from PE to PE for all the classes of services.
A portal will be made available to you to view availability status. Information that you need to troubleshoot your networks will be available on this portal.
